Under the leadership of first year coach Jeff Lewis, the talented and spirited
Garfield Heights varsity wrestlers made the 1965-1966 campaign one to be long
rememebered. Their 9-2 record overall was the
best since the 1938 matmen went 7-1. With a 3-2 Greater Cleveland Conference
record, the grapplers finished in third place.
post-season competition, Garfield Heights placed second in the Sectional and
third in the District while seniors Mike Rubin and Al Neubert helped the Bulldogs
place 17th out of 351 at the State level.
Mike Rubin earned the right to compete in the 120-pound division of the Ohio State Interscholastic Wrestling Tournament by placing first in the District. In the first round, Rubin upset defending State Champion Dick Meyer of Toledo 2-1. Then, after defeating Pete Chakeris 3-1 in the quarter-finals, Rubin earned a hard fought 7-6 decision over Tom Porter of Toledo Macomber in the semifinals to qualify for the championship match. In that match and in front of 6000 spectators in The Ohio State University's St. John Arena, Rubin took a 2-1 lead into the third period, but lost the match 5-2 to Bob Buddie of John Marshall for a second place finish in the State.
Al Neubert qualified for the State tournament in the 138-pound weight class by placing second in the District. Neubert defeated Bob Milligen 4-2 in the first round, but lost to eventual State Champion Bill Ennemoser 5-0 in the quarter finals. Following his disappointing loss, Neubert remarked: "It was a thrilling experience just to go to Columbus."
At the annual All-Sports Banquest, Rubin was honored as the team's MVP and Neubert was given the trophy for Garfield's most improved wrestler by posting a 9-2 record after finishing 2-6 as a junior. The MVP trophy was donated by the Garfield Heights Kiwanis.

Did You Know...
At 165 pounds, Foster Kestranek held the dubious distinction of having gained more weight during his four years of wrestling at Garfield than any other senior. Back in 9th grade, Kestranek weighed only 115 pounds.
Mike Rubin's greatest thrill came not in State competition, but during a tension-filled match with Euclid. Garfield was ahead by four with one match to go when heavyweight Rich Karwan had to face an opponent who was all too capable of scoring a pin for enough team points to give Euclid the victory. Although he lost the match, Karwan kept from being pinned and preserved Garfield's first victory over Euclid in ten years.
Steve Rubin, who also had an outstanding wrestling career at Garfield, attended "The Ohio State University" after graduating in 1965. During his first year as a Buckeye, he was awarded the "Most Valuable Freshman" award.
