Friendship through Interscholastic Competition
symbolized the fair play, yet competitive character of each 1965-1966 varsity athlete, whose hard work, unselfish dedication, and determination to win helped Garfield Heights High School realize one of its most successful years in sports. The 9-1 football team won the GCC championship with an undefeated conference record and defeated three non-conference teams that were champions of their respective leagues . The wrestling team posted its best record in 25 years as it competed in what many considered to be the toughest wrestling conference in the state. The baseball team tied for second place in the conference, and the golf team (in only its second season) sent one member to the state tournament after placing fifth in the 24 team District Tournament. Mr. Walter Williams, Athletic Director, ranked the football and wrestling teams among the finest ever to play at Garfield Heights.

The athletic council held its annual All-Sports Banquet on June 1, 1966 to honor the varsity letter winners, the most valuable player in each sport, and the athlete with the highest grade point average. Guests included varsity letter holders, their parents, and their coaches.

A great many individuals have contributed to the preparation of the GHHS66 sports pages. I extend a special thanks to the editorial staff and contributing writers of the 1965-1966 editions of Garfield Mirror, to Terry Cottrell who provided me with the resources that included copies of the Garfield Mirror, the banquet program, and paraphernalia, to Chris Geiser who wrote the rudimentary version, and to Anita Royer for scanning team pictures. ... by E.
